Privacy Policy
Effective date: 24 April 2026 · Last updated: 28 April 2026
Skim is built by Doruk Savasan (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights over it.
TL;DR
- We collect the minimum needed to run the app: your account identifier, email, and the documents you choose to process.
- Your document text is sent to Google Gemini for summarization. It is not used to train any AI model.
- When you ask the in-app AI tutor a question, your question + the relevant card content are also sent to Google Gemini for that one response. Same rules — not used for training.
- We don’t sell your data. Ever.
- You can delete everything from Settings → Delete Account. We honor it immediately.
What we collect
Account information
- Apple User ID or Google User ID — whichever sign-in method you choose. This is how we identify your account.
- Email address — if you share it (Apple lets you hide it; we work either way).
- Display name — optional, editable in Settings.
Content you upload
- The document (PDF, PPTX, DOCX, TXT, MD) you choose to process. We store it encrypted in Supabase Storage for as long as your account exists, so you can study the generated cards offline.
- The text extracted from that document, sent to Google Gemini to generate study cards. We do not keep a separate copy of the extracted text after processing completes.
- The study cards, quizzes, and progress data generated from your document.
- If you use the in-app AI tutor (deep-dive Q&A), the questions you type and the card content the question is anchored to are sent to Google Gemini per question. The text of your question is also stored locally on your device so you can revisit past conversations.
Usage metadata
- Counts of documents processed, characters processed per month, AI questions asked per month, streak days, and card completion state — so we can enforce subscription tiers and power progress visualizations.
- Crash reports via Sentry (no PII, no document content, no question text).
What we don’t collect
- Your location.
- Your contacts, photos, or microphone.
- Browsing or app-usage tracking outside Skim.
- Any information from third parties.
How we use your data
- Generate study cards — your document text is sent to Google Gemini via our secure server. Google processes it statelessly and returns cards.
- Power the AI tutor — when you tap a key term or ask a follow-up question, the card content + your question are sent to Google Gemini for that single response. Cached server-side per card+term so subsequent users on the same card get instant answers without a new AI call.
- Sync across your devices — documents, progress, streaks, and chat history live in Supabase so iPhone ↔ iPad stays consistent.
- Enforce subscription tiers — character-count and AI-question meters determine whether you’ve hit your monthly cap.
- Send notifications — streak reminders, due-date reminders, processing-complete alerts. All can be disabled in Settings.
- Diagnose crashes — Sentry receives anonymized crash reports. No document content, no email, no tokens, no question text.
Who we share data with
- Google (Gemini API) — receives the text extracted from your document and any AI-tutor questions you ask, solely to generate responses. Google states this data is not used to train their models when accessed via paid APIs.
- Supabase — our cloud database and file storage provider. Bound by industry-standard data processing agreements.
- Sentry — anonymized crash reporting.
- Apple — handles App Store subscriptions and payments. We never see your payment info.
We do not share data with advertisers. We do not sell data.
How long we keep it
- Account data: as long as your account exists.
- Uploaded documents and generated cards: as long as your account exists, OR until you delete the document from your Library.
- AI-tutor question history: stored locally on your device + synced to your account; removed when you delete the account.
- Deleted accounts: purged from our systems within 30 days.
- Crash reports: 90 days.
Your rights
- Delete individual documents — swipe to delete in the Library.
- Delete your entire account — Settings → Delete Account. Removes profile, documents, cards, progress, and chat history. Irreversible.
- Opt out of notifications — Settings → Notifications.
- Manage subscriptions — Settings → Subscription → Manage.
- Access / correct data — email us and we’ll help.
If you’re in the EU (GDPR) or California (CCPA), you also have formal rights to access, rectify, or restrict processing of your data. Email us to exercise them.
Children
Skim is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll remove it.
